AV Cases FAQ
An AV case (or “road case”) is a protective hard case built to move audio-visual equipment safely. It uses a rugged shell and shaped foam to keep cameras, mixers, monitors, rack gear, and similar equipment from shifting or taking impact in transit.
Start with the gear you're protecting and its dimensions, then factor in how you transport it, how much protection it needs, and whether you want wheels for heavy loads. Match the interior and foam to the equipment, or go custom if the fit has to be exact.
A hard case has a rigid shell that resists drops, crushing, and rough handling, which makes it the choice for travel and shipping. A soft or semi-rigid case is lighter and easier to carry, but offers less protection, so it suits gear that stays close to you and takes less abuse.
Not all, but many do. You can often choose pick-and-pluck foam that you shape yourself, or order custom water-jet or die-cut foam cut to cradle your exact gear.
Rack gear is measured in rack units (“RU” or just "U”), where one U equals 1.75 inches of vertical rail space on the 19-inch rack standard. Add up the U height of your gear to size the case, then match the case depth to your deepest component.
