1. How Big of a Case do You Need?
Your first step should be figuring out how big your case needs to be. (This isn't always as simple as it seems!)
There are several factors that need to be taken into consideration:
How much foam do you need surrounding your equipment?
Consider the following:
- Equipment sensitivity
- How the case will be transported/handled
- Type of foam being used
How will the items be configured in the case?
Consider the following:
- Equipment grouping - will everything have its own pocket or can some items be grouped together?
- Load balancing - it's always a good idea to try and distribute the weight evenly (or near the wheels should your case have them)
- Thinking a certain case will work? Tape off the internal dimensions on a flat surface using masking tape and physically lay everything out to confirm it will fit
- Foam thickness around the perimeter of the inside of the case.
- Wall thickness between pockets - thicker walls will help ensure protection and improve durability
- The Base to Lid ratio/measurements - do you want your equipment sitting below the split line of the case? (The split line is where the base and lid meet/split)
Are there any special features or contours for the cases your looking at?
Consider the following:
- Does your case have wheels or a pull handle? If so, this may reduce the available space in certain areas of the case
- Are the walls of the case tapered?
- Rounded corners and curves.
