What is a Rack Mount Case?
A rack Mount case is a specialized enclosure designed to house and protect electronic equipment that are built to fit the standard 19-inch rack format. Rack mount cases are essential for anyone who needs to protect valuable rack mountable equipment. They provide excellent protection, organization, durability and security to the items being store and can shield your gear from shocks, drops, and debris making them essential for military and field operations. Other excellent uses for a rack mount case include musicians, AV technicians, and IT professionals.
Understanding Rack Mount Cases
When considering Rack Mount Cases, it is important to understand the measurements used to describe the product. Rack cases will typically be demonstrated with a numbered “U” (U is short form for Units), for example a 4U rack case. Each unit or “U” is 1.75 inches in height. For example, see the Pelican Classic V Series 4U Rack Case. This case has Internal dimensions of 19.00” W x 33.00” D x 7.00” H. These dimensions show the width of the internal dimensions as 19” wide, as well as the depth of the case (from front rail to back rail) of 33”. Finally, the internal height of the case as 7”. The height is the important number when considering units. If we take that height number of 7 and divide it by 1.75, we arrive at the number 4. This tells us that our case is 4 Units, which will be listed in most places as a 4U case. The unit measurement is important as it measures how many or how large of an item can fit inside the case itself. As rack cases are used to house rack-able devices such as servers, switches, routers, telecommunication equipment, military electronics etc. the most important measurement is the height that the case provides for these rack-able devices.

Pelican and SKB both provide several options for Rotomolded Rack Cases which are extremely durable and offer excellent impact resistance. A custom Laminate PCC Rack Mount Case would be made from wood bonded with an ABS laminate skin which are typically very pleasing to look at however, they are not as suited for harsh environments.
